Manor Profile
Hambledon, Hampshire· Hambledon Hundred· 1316 – 1831
Also known as: Barn Green
Denmead was a tithing within Hambledon parish held by the Bishop of Winchester. The bishops leased it to various tenants during the thirteenth century. In 1316 it appeared as a paying tenant at the bishop's court of Hambledon (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
William Wayte was the first to hold Denmead as a manor, dying seised in 1449. He held of the Bishop of Winchester. His son Edward inherited at the age of five. Edward's son Simon Wayte died in 1518, and Simon's brother William inherited. William Wayte died in 1561 holding extensive lands in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight. The manor was divided among his six daughters: Eleanor (married Richard Bruning), Mary (married William Cresweller), Honor (married cousin William Wayte), Margaret (married Henry Perkins), Elizabeth (married Richard Norton), and Susan (married William Wollascot) (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
Eleanor Bruning died in 1593, leaving one-sixth to her son Francis with an annuity to William Bruning and a jointure for Ellen, daughter of Anthony Uvedale. Christine Bruning gave this sixth to Humphrey Sandford and Thomas Wollascot in 1604, but the share returned to the Brunings in 1610. Richard Bruning died seised in 1612, leaving it to his son Anthony. Anthony held the manor in 1652 and conveyed it to Richard Love and John Bold, probably as trustees. Richard Bruning held it in 1718, settling it on George Parker (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
William Wollascot junior and wife Anne, with son William, conveyed the manor in 1613 to Otho Gayer and George Parker as settlement. William Wollascot senior died seised in 1618 of lands in Denmead in right of his wife Susan. Edward Wollascot and wife Anne conveyed both Denmead and the manor of Glidden to Thomas Battlesworth in 1656 (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
Richard Perkins and Francis Perkins made settlement of the manors of Denmead and Glidden in 1671. In 1703 Anne Perkins of Beenham, Berkshire, granted her share to cousin Thomas Perkins, who conveyed the manors to George Norris and Richard Heverden. William du Gard and wife Elizabeth held Denmead and Glidden in Elizabeth's right in 1713 and conveyed to Robert Heart. William Smith and wife Jane held in 1744 and conveyed to Thomas d'Oyley. Twenty-five years later William and Jane sold to Thomas Bernard, who conveyed to Thomas Martin and William Hatch (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
In 1831 Henry Kennett and wife Fanny held the manors of Denmead and Glidden with courts leet, courts baron, and view of frankpledge, settling them on William Higgins. No further mention of the manors occurs after this date (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
