Manor Profile
Hambledon, Hampshire· Hambledon Hundred· 1272 – 1593
Also known as: Denmead Molins
Denmead Molyns was a separate holding in Hambledon parish, taking its name from the family who held it in the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. In 1272 Richard de Lys and Florence granted one-third of a messuage and carucate of land in Denmead to Philip de Molyns and Joan. In 1299 William de Raunville granted a messuage and carucate in Hambledon to Simon de Fareham, which may have been the same property. By 1346 John de Molyns of Fareham held five messuages and 50 acres in demesne at Denmead from the Bishop of Winchester (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
At the Dissolution, Denmead Molyns was held by the prior and convent of Southwick; the manner and date of acquisition by the priory are unknown. In 1543 the manor was granted to Thomas Wriothesley with all appurtenances. Lord Chancellor Wriothesley granted it to Anthony Cope and his heirs in June 1544. In 1593 licence was granted to John Cope, Jane his wife, Anne Cope widow, and others to alienate the manor of Denmead Molyns, held of the queen in chief, to John Knight and his heirs. No further records concerning Denmead Molyns appear after 1593 (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
