Manor Profile
Hambledon, Hampshire· Hambledon Hundred· 1397 – 1908
Also known as: Ernelles, Ervelys, Ervills Exton
Ervill's Exton (also Ernelles in the fourteenth century, Ervelys and Ervills Exton in the fifteenth century) was a sub-manor and tithing within the parish of Hambledon in Hampshire. The manor owed suit at the bishop's court of Hambledon along with the other tithings of the parish (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
The earliest documented holders were William Haket and Julia, who held the manor in Julia's right in 1397. That year, William Audeley and wife Julia conveyed the reversion to Sir William Lescrope, Henry Maupas and others. By 1417 John Kyngesmill held the manor in right of his wife Cecily. In 1425 William Heverfield and wife Cecily conveyed lands in Exton near Hambledon to Henry Merston and trustees (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
In 1448 Thomas Radford and wife Matilda conveyed the manor to William Warburton and Robert Dynelly. By 1473 Robert Dynelly's heirs, the Ludlow family, were seised of the manor. On 20 October 1473 the manor was settled on William Kirkeby and wife Margery through Thomas Jurdew and William Coltyng. Kirkeby died in 1476, leaving his son John as heir. The Kirkeby family retained the manor until 1597, when Thomas Kirkeby and wife Sarah sold to William Stockman for five hundred pounds (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
William Stockman sold the manor to Christopher Perrin in 1602 for the same sum of five hundred pounds. Christopher Perrin died seised in 1612. His son Henry Perrin conveyed the capital messuage, farm and demesnes, then known as Ervill's Farm, to Bartholomew Smith of the Soak near Winchester in 1662. In 1705 Christopher Perrin and wife Sarah conveyed the manor to Elizabeth Perrin (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
By 1767 Thomas Futcher and William Pistell held portions of the manor in right of their wives Mary and Sarah respectively. They conveyed their interests to Henry Whitear that year. In 1776 William Pistell and Sarah quitclaimed to Edward Bradley. After this date there is no further mention of the manor as a separate entity (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
At the time of the VCH publication in 1908, the whole of Hambledon parish, including the tithing of Ervill's Exton, was in the hands of the Ecclesiastical Commissioners, who are stated to be "apparently lords of the manor" (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 238-244).
