Manor Profile
Portsea, Hampshire· Portsdown Hundred· 1066 – 1610
Also known as: Frodington, Frodinton
Fratton was held by Chetel under Edward the Confessor. After the Conquest, William de Warenne obtained the manor, with Orsmelin as tenant. Hugh de Plaiz, the successor of Orsmelin, granted half a knight's fee to the Domus Dei (God's House) of Portsmouth. The hospital held the manor through the medieval period, obtaining a grant of free warren in 1306 (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 201-202).
The Domus Dei surrendered at the Dissolution in 1540, and the Crown retained the manorial rights. The manor was granted to Henry, Prince of Wales, in 1610 (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 201-202).
Southsea Common was entirely within Fratton manor land. The manor's position on Portsea Island placed it within the wider military and naval landscape of Portsmouth (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 201-202).
