Manor Profile
Westbourne, West Sussex· Westbourne and Singleton Hundred· 1140 – 1885
Also known as: Manor of Bourne (Priory de Calceto)
Queen Adeliza, widow of Henry I, after marrying William d'Aubigny, founded a small priory on the Causeway outside Arundel (the Priory de Calceto) and granted it Westbourne land. In 1352 John le Botiller gave another 60 acres. In 1525 the priory was suppressed and the property assigned to Cardinal Wolsey for his Oxford college.
After Wolsey's fall the Crown seized the estate. In 1530 the "manor of Bourne, late of the Priory de Calceto" was settled on Lucy, daughter of the Marquess of Montague, who married Sir Anthony Browne. Browne's descendants held it as the manor of Westbrook.
By about 1607 the manor passed to Nicholas Westbrook. In 1664 Richard Westbrook held it, and in 1694 William Westbrook held it and mortgaged it to Elizabeth Barnard. The manor passed to Barnard descendants. In 1761 William Barnard held it. Richard Barwell of Stansted then purchased it, after which it descended with his estates and the main Westbourne descent.
