Manor Profile
Aldingbourne, West Sussex· Box and Stockbridge Hundred· 1535 – 1880
Also known as: Kneighton
Nyton was held by Boxgrove Priory before the Dissolution. The priory farmed Nyton at 66s. 8d. in 1535. The land called Worth (Werda, Wurta) had revenues assigned to the priory kitchen.
At the Dissolution (1537) the property passed to the Crown. Robert Thornhill, a land-speculator, acquired the farm of Nyton and two fields "lez Worthe" on 16 August 1546, alienating them to John More and Elizabeth the very next day. Nicholas More inherited in 1559 and alienated to John Trunnell shortly after.
The Trunnell family held until c.1680 when it passed to Thomas Peckham. John Peckham died in 1782; his daughter Mary married Charles Hewitt Smith. Their son Charles took the name and arms of Peckham. Rev. Harry John Peckham sold the estate in 1880.
No separate Domesday entry. Part of the Aldingbourne complex. The land called Worth (Werda, Wurta) was given by William de St John and others to Boxgrove Priory, with revenues assigned to the kitchen.
