Manor Profile
Funtington, West Sussex· Bosham Hundred· 1086 – 1953
Also known as: Funtington Hamlet
Funtington lies in the northern part of the Bosham Hundred, inland from Chichester Harbour. The VCH records that Funtington was a member of the manor of Bosham and was usually termed a hamlet until the fifteenth century. In 1478, and in later records, it figures as a manor. It descended with Bosham throughout the medieval period (VCH Sussex, Vol. 4, pp. 190-192).
As a member of Bosham, Funtington passed through the same lordship chain: the Crown after 1066, then the Marshal earls of Pembroke (from 1194), the Bigod earls of Norfolk (from the mid-thirteenth century), and Roger Bigod who died in 1306 holding Bosham with Funtington hamlet. The manor then passed with Bosham through Thomas of Brotherton, the Mowbray dukes of Norfolk, and the Berkeley earls (VCH Sussex, Vol. 4, pp. 183-187, 190).
Sophie, Lady Gifford, held the manor until it was acquired from her by Albert Eadie around 1915. The rectory of Funtington formed a prebend attached to the office of sexton, or sacrist, in the college of Bosham, valued in 1291 at 26 pounds 13 shillings 4 pence. After the suppression of Bosham College in 1548, it became a perpetual curacy in the gift of the Dean and Chapter of Chichester (VCH Sussex, Vol. 4, pp. 190-192).
