Manor Profile
Bishop's Waltham, Hampshire· Bishop's Waltham Hundred· 1296 – 1878
Also known as: Hulle, Hylle beside Botley
Fairthorne, earlier known as Hulle, was a sub-manor of Bishop's Waltham possibly originating from a 1296 acquisition by William de la Hulle and Agnes his wife. The property is first clearly identified as Hulle in 1333, described as lying in Southwaltham and Hulle near Botley (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 276-282).
In 1361 Thomas de Overton held 140 acres at Hulle. By the early fifteenth century Robert Tanke held the Manor of Hylle beside Botley, which is the first use of the term manor for this property. William Tanke died seised of the lands in 1504. His daughter Joan married Richard Ryman. Following a settlement in 1542 between Joan Bartlett (Ryman's widow) and Edward Bartlett, the property passed through several hands (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 276-282).
By 1600 Francis Serle was in possession. In 1684 Wriothesley Baptist Noel held the manor. It passed to the Portland family, descendants of Henry, first Duke of Portland, who held it in 1734 and 1762. Around 1806 William Cobbett purchased approximately 300 acres and established a farm with tree plantations. R.A. Burrell purchased the estate from Sir Thomas Freke in 1878 (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 276-282).
The estate contained a Roman villa site and was noted in literary accounts of English scenery (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 276-282).
