East Hampnett was held by Alward before the Conquest. In 1086 Nigel held 7 hides under William of Halnaker. Gilbert de Sartilli (late 12th century, probably Nigel's descendant) gave 1.5 virgates and 10s. rent to Boxgrove Priory for wine at mass.
Hugh Lovel died in 1290 holding 1 knight's fee, which was divided among three coheirs. Through complex descent, Thomas ap Adam granted the manor to Sir John Inge (1329). Inge and Alice Basset sold to Richard, Earl of Arundel (1340). The manor descended with the Arundel estates through the FitzAlans and Lumleys.
Edward Peckham and Grace purchased in 1584. Sir George Jeffreys (Lord Chancellor of James II) held courts 1682-1686 before selling to Richard Smith. Arthur Turnour (son of John Gore) held from 1696. Edward Turnour was created Earl Winterton in 1766. West Sussex County Council acquired the manor in 1920.
