Manor Profile
Chidham, West Sussex· Bosham Hundred· 1616 – 1793
Also known as: Middleton in Chidham, Chidham Middleton
Chidham Hacket was a subinfeudation within the main Chidham manor, created in 1616. Sir Richard Worseley, baronet, granted property to Lady Elizabeth White (widow of Sir Richard White) and her daughter Elizabeth White for their lives. Sir Richard Worseley died seised in 1621.
In 1720 Sir Robert Worseley, baronet, and Frances conveyed the property to John Wakeford. In 1793 Samuel Colby, Mary Colby, John McFarland, and Elizabeth McFarland conveyed it to Joseph Postlethwaite.
The record ends with the 1793 conveyance. This was a minor subinfeudation that appears to have quietly lapsed. Middleton House, built around 1730 with purple and red brick construction, is the principal surviving structure.
No Domesday entry. Chidham Hacket was a subinfeudation created in 1616 within the main Chidham manor. Chidham itself was not separately assessed at Domesday, being part of the Bishop of Exeter's Bosham estate.
