Manor Profile
Fareham, Hampshire· Fareham Hundred· 1086 – 1895
Also known as: Cammes Oysell, Camoyse Oysell, Cams Oysell
Cams developed from a second Domesday holding within Fareham of 4 hides held by William, formerly held by Earl Godwin. The Oysell family held the manor from at least 1166, when Robert Oysell held one knight's fee of the Bishop of Winchester in Hampshire. John Oysell represented Fareham borough in Parliament in 1306. Nicholas Oysell held the vill in 1316 and appears to be the last family member connected to it (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 209-216).
By 1346 Nicholas Stake held one knight's fee in Cams. The manor passed through several hands in the late fourteenth and early fifteenth centuries. William Audley and wife Julia conveyed it to trustees in 1397-1398 for the heirs of Henry Maupas. John Kingsmill and wife Cecily conveyed it in 1417-1418 for the heirs of Reginald Curteys. In 1451 Nicholas Wymbish conveyed it to Matilda, wife of Thomas Radford, kinswoman and heiress of Curteys. Meanwhile the Ludlow family held grants from the manor, and by c.1537 John Ludlow held it as one knight's fee (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 209-216).
In the early seventeenth century the manor passed to Emmanuel Badd, who died in 1632. His son Thomas succeeded and was created baronet in 1642. Sir Thomas died without male heirs in 1683, having conveyed the manor, worth £500 per year, to trustees to sell and divide the proceeds among his five daughters. Richard Chandler purchased interests from two daughters before 1701-1702. The manor passed to the Carnac family, probably by purchase, and was acquired by John Delme in 1781, remaining in that family until 1895 when it was purchased by Mr Montagu Foster (VCH Hampshire Vol. 3, pp. 209-216).
