Manor Profile
North Mundham, West Sussex· Box and Stockbridge Hundred· 1162 – 1953
William de St John, with wife Olive and brother Robert, gave one-third of the manor of Mundham to the Abbey of La Luzerne (Normandy) c.1162. This gift encompassed the hamlets of Brimfast and Fisher.
In 1340, war with France led to seizure of the abbey's lands. Successive custodians held until 1441, when Henry VI granted the alien priory lands to his College at Eton (Eton College). Edward IV resumed the grant in 1462, giving custody to William Beaufitz. The lands were restored to Eton College in 1467, briefly diverted to St George's Chapel, Windsor in 1474, and subsequently returned.
Eton College still hold the manor at the time of VCH publication (1953).
No separate Domesday entry. Part of the wider Mundham holding.
