Manor Profile
Birdham, West Sussex· Manhood Hundred· 1565 – 1953
Also known as: Court Barns
Birdham Court Barns was the second of two sub-manors within the Birdham estate. The 1565 grant from Elizabeth I to the Dean and Chapter of Chichester included "the other manor of Birdham," presumably that known as Court Barns.
The manor descended with Birdham Broomer thereafter, except that during the Commonwealth it was acquired by John Downes rather than Thomas Butterie who acquired the Broomer manor. Both manors returned to the Dean and Chapter after the Restoration.
The manor is now held by the Ecclesiastical Commissioners.
No separate Domesday entry. Birdham Court Barns was the second of the two Birdham sub-manors. Its early history is not distinguishable from Birdham Broomer. The 1565 grant to the Dean and Chapter of Chichester included "the other manor of Birdham", presumably that known as Court Barns.
