Manor Profile
Southwick, Hampshire· Portsdown Hundred· 1086 – 1803
Also known as: Belamy, Belney
Belanney was a sub-manor within the parish of Southwick. Its origins may lie in the Domesday holding of William Mauduit, who held two hides less one virgate in Southwick in 1086.
William de Belanney held half a fee in 1263. William Mauduit claimed custody of the lands and heir. Baldwin de Belanney held one fee in 1346. In 1350 and again in 1359 Baldwin granted the manor to Henry Sturmy of Elvetham and Margaret his wife. In 1359 Henry Sturmy also received a grant of free warren in his demesne lands of Belanney.
The Sturmy family held Belanney for more than fifty years. In 1416 Sir William Sturmy granted it to Sir William Hankford and Robert Hall, probably as trustees.
Richard Holt held one fee in Belanney at his death in 1457. His widow Joan, who later married Constantine Darrell, held the manor in dower until 1495. Upon Joan's death the manor was partitioned. John Pound and Elizabeth received it. John Pound died seised in 1511.
William Pound, Elizabeth's son, died in 1525 and left the manor to his second son William. The marriage of Mary Pound to Edward White brought Belanney into the White family, after which it followed the descent of Southwick manor.
Courts leet were recorded as late as 1803.
